Robert Mitchell (c. 1760c. 1808)

Mitchell was a neighbor of Bushrod Washington in Westmoreland County. He served with Washington as a director of the Mutual Assurance Society of Virginia for the Richmond County area.

Description

Robert Mitchell was born in Lancaster County, Virginia. A clerk of Robert Carter at Nomini Hall in the mid-1770s, he later worked as a planter, sheriff, and justice of Richmond County. In 1782 he married Carter's eldest daughter Priscilla. Seven of their children survived infancy. Mitchell died circa 1808 and is thought to be buried with his wife at Nomini Hall.
