Elias Boudinot Caldwell (1776–1825)

Description

Elias Boudinot Caldwell was born on 13 April 1776 in Elizabethtown, New Jersey. His mother and father, both active patriots, were killed during the Revolutionary War. Founding Father Elias Boudinot (1740–1821) took in young Caldwell, supporting his education and training him in the law. In 1800 Caldwell became the clerk of the U.S. Supreme Court, a post he held until his death. The prior year he had married Elizabeth Boyd (1784–1818), who would bear him six children.  In 1820 he married Ann Lingan. Caldwell was a founding member and secretary of the American Colonization Society.
