James Caldwell (1747–1829)
In 1803 Bushrod Washington wrote Caldwell regarding George Washington's lands in the Mohawk Valley of New York.
James Caldwell was born in 1747 in County Donegal, Ireland. While in his twenties, James and his brother Joseph immigrated to America and settled in Philadelphia, where James would marry Elizabeth Barnes in 1774. After learning the merchant trade, the brothers moved to Albany and opened a grocery store. The business thrived during the Revolutionary War as a supplier of goods to the Continental Army.
