James G.W. Neale

In 1811 Neale asked Bushrod Washington about his (Neale's) mother, noting that she had accompanied George Washington during the Revolutionary War.

Description

On at least two occasions James G.W. Neale, an illegitimate son of one Margaret Keith, wrote President Thomas Jefferson to request a commission in the army. He briefly served as a Marine private in 1808 before his (requested) discharge. On 31 August 1811 Neale asked Secretary of War William Eustis for a captaincy, noting that "my circumstances are somewhat cramped." Military records indicate that Neale served as a private in the 27th Regiment, (Long’s) Maryland militia during the War of 1812. As of July 1823, a James G.W.
