Thomas Newman (1775–1862)
Thomas Newman was born on 15 August 1775 in Orange County, Virginia. A planter and slaveholder—the 1830 U.S. Census enumerates eighty-eight slaves—Newman owned properties that included a parcel adjacent to Montpelier, the Orange County estate of James Madison.
