Description

Jan Pieter van Suchtelen was born on 2 August 1751 in Grave aan de Maas, Netherlands. Trained as a military engineer, he joined the Russian army and fought in the Russo-Swedish War (180809). He subsequently served as the Russian minister to Sweden. Suchtelen was an avid bibliophile, with the bulk of his collection of more than 26,000 books stored at the National Library of Russia in St. Petersburg.
