John Mercer Patton (17971858)

Description

John Mercer Patton, great-grandfather of World War II General George S. Patton, was born on 10 August 1797 in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He graduated from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania, but never worked as a physician. Upon returning to Virginia, Patton practiced law and served as a U.S. representative (183038), executive councilman, and acting governor.
