Mary Griffith Preto (c. 1800–c. 1870)

Role

Bushrod Washington was friends with Preto's father, a fellow jurist.

Description

Mary Griffith, daughter of federal judge William Griffith, was born circa 1800 in New Jersey.  In 1828 she married Francisco Preto y Neto (17961858), a Menorcan politician and bureaucrat who at the time was in exile in the United States. The following year Mary wrote Bushrod Washington, appealing to "her father’s best friend" to help her impecunious husband obtain a job with the State Department.
