James Iredell (1751–1799)

Iredell was a U.S. Supreme Court colleague of Bushrod Washington. 

Description

James Iredell was born on 5 October 1751 in Lewes, England. At the age of seventeen, he sailed to North Carolina to assume the post of comptroller of customs at Edenton. He read law under Samuel Johnston (17331816) and commenced practice in 1770. Iredell held several public offices over the next decade, including judge of the North Carolina Superior Court (1777) and state attorney general (177981).
