Elbert Nevius (18081897)

Description

Elbert Nevius was born on 4 September 1808 in Wayne Township, New Jersey. A graduate of Rutgers University and the New Brunswick Theological Seminary, he was ordained in the Dutch Reformed Church in 1834. The next year he married Maria Louisa Condit (or Condict, born 1808); four of their eight children lived to maturity. Following service as a missionary in Borneo, Nevius was a Reformed Church minister in Stuyvesant, New York, for approximately forty years.
