Burwell Bassett Jr., a nephew of Martha Washington and cousin of William Henry Harrison, was born on 18 March 1764 at Eltham, the family plantation near present-day West Point, New Kent County, Virginia. He attended The College of William and Mary before inheriting a large estate, which he would work with upwards of 100 slaves.
