Joseph Story (1779–1845)
Story and Bushrod Washington were U.S. Supreme Court colleagues from 1811 to 1829.
Joseph Story, the son of a participant in the Boston Tea Party, was born on 18 September 1779 in Marblehead, Massachusetts. He graduated second in his class at Harvard, read law, and (in 1801) was admitted to the bar. Following service in the Massachusetts House and a single term in the U.S. House of Representatives, he was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1811.
