William Robertson (1721–1793)

Description

William Robertson, historian and clergyman, was born on 8 September 1721 in Borthwick, Edinburghshire, Scotland. Following attendance at the University of Edinburgh, he studied divinity and (in 1744) was ordained in the Church of Scotland. In addition to his role as parish minister, Robertson served as principal of the University of Edinburgh and moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.
