Charles Smith, son of William Smith, was born in Philadelphia on 3 or 4 March 1765. A graduate of Washington College (MD), he practiced law, served in the Pennsylvania legislature (1806–09, 1815–19), and sat as president judge of the Ninth Judicial District of Pennsylvania. In 1791 Smith married Mary Yeates (1770–1836), with whom he would have ten children. Charles Smith died in Philadelphia on 18 March 1836.
