David Poe Jr. (1784–1811)
Description
David Poe Jr., father of writer Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849), was born on 18 July 1784 in Baltimore, Maryland. He studied law and served as postmaster of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, before pursuing an acting career. Poe married Elizabeth Hopkins "Eliza" Arnold (1787/88–1811) in 1806. An alcoholic, he would abandon Arnold and their three children. David Poe Jr. died in on 11 December 1811 in Norfolk, Virginia.
