To William Augustine Washington, 8 Oct. 1806
Phila. Octr 8. 1806
My dear Sir
Your letter of the 4th has Just come to hand; that of the 23 Ultimo was recieved some days earlier. I shall use my best exertions to fulfill your wishes expressed in both & am now engaged on the subject of the War tho with nothing like certainty as to its success. I will write you the moment that any thing occurs worth mentioning.
It is true that no deed has been made to Mr Parks nor indeed to any of the purchasers except to Robt Lewis & Burdet Ashton, the only two from whom I could obtain mortgages altho repeated applications had been made to them on the subject. This makes however no difference; because the lands remain bound for the purchase mony as much as if regular mortgages had been executed, & in cases suits should become necessary the names of the executors must be used. I wrote to Mr Parks before I left home that I was ready at any moment to make him a deed & would do so as soon as I returned. The want of a deed had not been suggested until Just as I was setting off.
The debt due from him together with the balance to be paid by Robt Lewis, exceeds the proportion of you & your sons, but how much, I cannot now recollect; I mentioned to Mr Parks how much he was to pay.
I write now in great haste that my letter may get into the post office in time—my best respects to Mrs W. & love to the boys— Tell them that I expect to hear from them. I am my dear Sir very sincerely & affectly yrs
