Description

Thomas Beale Ewell, physician, was born on 22 May 1785 near Dumfries, Virginia. After studying medicine with Benjamin Rush at the University of Pennsylvania, he was a surgeon at the naval hospital in New York (180813). In 1807 he married Elizabeth Stoddert (17841859), the daughter of the first secretary of the navy. Together they had nine children, including Confederate General Richard Stoddert Ewell.
