Nathan Dane (1752–1835)

Description

Nathan Dane was born on 29 December 1752 in Ipswich, Massachusetts. He worked on the family farm before attending Harvard College, from which he graduated in 1778. The following year he married Mary Brown (c. 1750–1840). Dane practiced law in Beverly, sat in the Massachusetts state legislature, served in the Continental Congress (where he co-authored the Northwest Ordinance of 1787), and published an eight-volume compendium of American law.
