My dear Brother
Since I had the pleasure of seeing you, or writing to you, I have been one of the most unhappy creatures in the world— I have expected to loose my dear wife by very severe epileptic Fits, which seized he[r] on the 9th of the present Month, and attended her for several days & nights— It is now 14 or 15 days since she has had any return of them; but, I fear, they will return again— I have imployed the best Physicians in this part of the world, and they flatter me with her entire recovery— My constant attention is not wanted you may be sure— My children are well, except that they have bad colds— The putrid sore throat has been pretty prevalent on the other side of Nomony, and in some families this Side, and indeed, in some places rather fatal— This malady, thank God, we have hitherto escaped— Poor Mrs Turberville of Hiccory Hill died about 3 week ago. When I got home I met with a letter from Mr Downman saying he had been at my house a few days before to take in his bond to you, and requested I would go down for the Money, which I would have done immediately, but was too unwell with a cold and fall I got from my chair— On the 15 I got Mr Ariss Buckner to go down & bring the money to me, and should have carried it without delay to Mr Butler & Thomson; but my wife required my constant attention, as her Fits came on suddenly, and without any previous Symptoms, & I had no white person to assist me in attending her—only two ignorant negro girls— God grant you may never—never experience so distressing a Situation—but we must learn to suffer—uninterrupted happiness no mortal can know.
Agreeable to yr request, I have reserved you four hogs exclusive of the four I owe you, and am sorry the frost has prevented me from sending up the fats, and off-falls which I had well packed up for the voyage— the latter, I fear, will be spoiled before there will be an Opportunity— The four I owe you are viz. 120, 118, 120, 143 The other four are 142, 111, 125, 107 in all 985 I will endeavour to have them well cured for you, and sent up when you direct— Poor Hannah has got a couple of bottles of good Honey to send you when a conveyance can be had. Present my love to my Sister and be assured that I am Yr very Affect. & Sinc. Bro.
