To John Augustine Washington

Dr & Honoured Sir

The Post will sett off in 10 Minutes so that you may expect that that time can only be devoted to Business.

I have Just Recieived the Hemp from Berkeley and have given it to Mr Hollingsworth to sell; I believe he will do the best for my Interest of any other Merchant in Town— Nine Pence pr lb is the most that I can expect— The Length of time that I had wanted Mony previous to the receipt of it, oblidged me to Borrow, so that I can very little more than <mutilated> Debts, and replace the Cloaths I lost with the mony arising from <mutilated>.

I know of no other mode of making me remittances <mutilated> but in Tobacco; to be conveyed here by water— That article at present <sells> better than it has done for some months past—its price is four Dollars pr lb. Could you spare me a few Hogshds to be sent up as Early as possible it will make me more Independent than I am at present—not that I now absolutely want, but I have not such a Sum as will be able to answer the demand of this Winter— The Reason why I am anxious that you would send Tobacco speedily is, least the ice should prevent the Transportation of it when the back is more advanced— If Mr Conway will pay the Tobacco due for my Horse (which by the bye was to have been payed last augt) it would answer my purpose very well, and I dare say would be very convenient to you.

The Little time allowed me to write in debars me of an opportunity of communicating any News, or writing on any subject but Business or even of making an apology for this abrupt and huryed scraul But to you my Dr Papa I feel a kind of freedom and Ease in communicating my thoughts which nothing but your goodness would otherwise give me confidence in doing; and as I'm sure you are very well acquainted with every sentiment of my heart relating to you so I am certain you can discover nothing there but the sincerist affection and most ardent Duty. Pray assure Mama of my Love & Believe me to be with every sentiment of Respect Dr & Honoured Sir Your very Dutyfull & aff. Son

Bushrod Washington

I shall take the Earliest opportunity to write you a Long Letter— B. W.
