Jared Sparks (1789–1866)
Sparks corresponded with Bushrod Washington while preparing The Writings of George Washington.
Jared Sparks was born on 10 May 1789 in Willington, Connecticut. A modest upbringing delayed his education, and he did not enter Harvard College until his early twenties. Following graduation, he worked as a science tutor at Harvard, edited the North American Review, held a Baltimore ministry in the Unitarian Church, and served as chaplain of the U.S. House of Representatives.
