Charles Fenton Mercer (1778–1858)
Mercer studied law under Bushrod Washington.
Charles Fenton Mercer, a nephew of John Francis Mercer, was born on 16 June 1778 in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Following attendance at present-day Princeton University, he studied law and was admitted to the Virginia bar. During his tenure in the Virginia House of Delegates (1810–17), he served as an officer of Virginia militia in the War of 1812. Following the war, Mercer won a seat in the U.S.
