From John Marshall
Richmond april 29th 1804
My dear Sir
In the letters lately addressed to you I have forgotten to mention a circumstance which deserves some attention. In the old books from which I extracted the facts composing the first volume I found our bay spilt thus—Chessapeake. Without any examination of the orthography I believe I have gone on to spell it in the same manner. My attention was not attracted to the word till I began to compare some sheets which have been copied for the 3d volume with the original when I noticed it & on looking into some modern books find it spelt with a single s & without the e final; thus—Chesapeak. The latter is I believe the approved orthography & of consequence I coud wish to have the correction made.
I have also observed that I have in the word enterpri<z>e,1 used the letter z. instead instead of s. It should be written enterprise. This I hope has been corrected. If not I wish it to be done.
I hope my son is in Philadelphia assisting to compare the 2d volumes with each other. If he is not & you wish his aid I will thank you to drop him a line requesting him to see you.
I am very disirous of hearing how many printed pages the written manuscript for the 2d vol. will overrun the printed copy & at what place the 2d vol. will terminate.
I also wish to know whether you correct the 2d volume respecting Braddocks defeat in conformity with my letter & how many copies Mr Wayne proposes to strike off for the first edition. The prospects of subscribes too will not be unacceptable information. I shall expect you in may & am dear Sir your
J. Marshall
