Edward Shippen Burd (1779–1848)

Edward Shippen Burd, a grandson of Pennsylvania Chief Justice Edward Shippen, was born on Christmas Day 1779 in Philadelphia. A 1794 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, he would serve two stints on that institution’s board. Burd supplemented his successful career as an attorney with ventures into real estate and various businesses. In 1810 he married watercolorist Eliza Howard Simms (1793–1860), with whom he donated to philanthropic projects such as St.
