John Francis (17631796)

Description

John Francis was born in Philadelphia on 30 May 1763. In 1788 he married Abigail Brown (17661821), the daughter of John Brown, a wealthy Providence merchant and treasurer of Rhode Island College (Brown University). Four years later, Francis and his father-in-law formed a mercantile partnership, the first Providence firm to trade in the East Indies and China. John Francis died on 4 November 1796.
