Dear Sir
We have the pleasure to inform you that the balance formerly stated to be due from you as executor of your father, is by a late decree of the Court reduced to the sum of six hundred and twenty four dollars sixty Cents $624.60 with interest from the 22d of last month, which balance we must now request you to pay at as early a day as possible, it being our earnest wish, as it is our duty, to close our transactions as executors without further delay. ALS, in BW's hand with both his and Lewis's signature, MHi: Miscellaneous Manuscripts Collection. BW addressed the cover to Thornton in Culpeper County, Virginia. The letter was never sent. According to BW's notation on the cover, "Before this letter was sent, I heard of Washington's death & on the 4 Jany 1827 I repeated the substance of it to Mrs Jane Thornton & requested payt in the course of this winter."
