From Robert Lewis

My dear Sir,

Your letter of the present month, without date, came duly to hand; & I sincerely thank you for your expressions of condolence in regard to my late misfortune— Such indeed has been my painful situation & close confinement by the inclemency of the weather that, I have not been able to pay the attention that I wished, to the claim of the estate of Genl Washington against me— I learn, however that, our Banks here have discontinued their discounts for a short season, in consequence of the heavy demands of the Northern Brokers, & some late [c]laims of the Bank of the United States to a considerable amount, in the way of an exchange of paper— In order however to expedite the discharge of my debt, I have written a letter to my brother this day to enquire whether a note can be discounted in Alexandria or not, If so, we will soon have the affair adjusted— Should I be disappointed from that source, the Virginia Bank in this place will accommodate me immediately on resuming their discounts— I have dealt with them largely for many years, & do not at this time, owe them a single cent— The Cashier has invited my custom merely on A/ct of my former punctuality. I am truly Yr Affectionte relation
