Thomas McKean (1734–1817)
Thomas McKean was born on 19 March 1734 in New London, Pennsylvania. He worked as a clerk and deputy prothonotary before practicing law. McKean's long public career included service as a member of the Delaware House of Assembly (1762–75), member of the Continental Congress (1774–76, 1778–82), president of the state of Delaware (1777), chief justice of Pennsylvania (1777–99), and governor of Pennsylvania (1799–1808). He also sat in the Stamp Act Congress of 1765, signed the Declaration of Independence, and served in the Revolutionary War.
