Thomas Walker Gilmer (18021844)

Description

Thomas Walker Gilmer was born on 6 April 1802 in Gilmerton, Albemarle County, Virginia. Following admission to the Albemarle County bar, he practiced law in Charlottesville and briefly acted as editor of the Virginia Advocate. In 1826 he married Anne Elizabeth Baker (18091874), daughter of the late Congressman John Baker. Gilmer’s political career began with election to the Virginia legislature, where he would sit intermittently from 1829 to 1840.
