Robert Goodloe Harper (1765–1825)
Robert Goodloe Harper and Bushrod Washington were both members of the American Colonization Society.
Robert Goodloe Harper, the only son of a cabinet maker, was born in January 1765 near Fredericksburg, Virginia. Following service in the Revolutionary War, he worked as a surveyor and attended the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), from which he graduated in 1785. Harper then moved to South Carolina, won admission to the bar, and opened a practice. His political career included service as a South Carolina legislator (1790), U.S.
