Description

Charles Stewart Todd, son of Thomas Todd, was born on 22 January 1791 in Lincoln County, Kentucky. A graduate of The College of William and Mary, he practiced law in Lexington before achieving distinction as an aide-de-camp to William Henry Harrison during the War of 1812. Todd thereafter returned to Kentucky, where he raised hemp and cattle, served as Kentucky secretary of state, and sat in the state legislature. He also held appointments as U.S. confidential agent to Gran Colombia (1820–24) and U.S. minister to Russia (1841–46).
