Robert Troup (1757–1832)

Description

Robert Troup, soldier, lawyer, and close friend of Alexander Hamilton, was born in New Jersey on 19 August 1757. A graduate of King's College (now Columbia University), he joined the New York militia at the start of the Revolutionary War. Troup would serve as an aide to General Horatio Gates (he is depicted in John Trumbull's Surrender of General Burgoyne at Saratoga), secretary to the board of war (1778–79), and secretary to the board of the treasury (1779–80).
