William Joseph Gaston (17781844)

Description

William Gaston, lawyer, politician, jurist, and devout Catholic, was born on 19 September 1778 in New Bern, North Carolina. A graduate of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), he gained admittance to the bar in 1798 and thereafter practiced law in New Bern. Gaston's political career included several stints in the North Carolina legislature and two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives (181317). In 1833 he won election to the North Carolina Supreme Court.
