Washington Feby 15. 1803
Dear Sir
Your favor of the 19th Decr was not received until a few days ago when I found it accidentally in the bar room of the tavern in which I stay.
Altho' I do not entirely concur in opinion with you that much good could be produced by the making public the letters you speak of at this time, I am yet strongly induced to yield that opinion to that of others whose Judgment I highly respect. I am at a loss however to gratify your & their wishes without encountering the difficulties I mentioned to you. I will think further of the subject, and see if permission cannot be obtained from the owner of the original letter to publish it. This might probably be effected by a gentleman of my acquaintance from whom an application to that effect might be successful.
Should I pass into your neighbourhood during my next Circuit, I shall certainly do myself the pleasure of calling upon you. I am Dear Sir very respectfully Yr obt. Servt.
