Dear Sir

Amongst the trunks & boxes sent over to the Chief Justice by Capt. Laycock is one which ought not to have gone as it contains some papers of a private nature, and the residue which are connected with the Life. I shall devote this winter to arranging & compiling so as to assist the Chief Justice & hasten the work‑ It is an old trunk not locked I believe, but confined by a rope & leather naild at each end to keep the top down. The trunks which are to remain are numbered 1, 4 & 6. I will thank you to deliver this trunk to the bearer mr Johnston who goes to Richmond on other business and will bring the trunk over if he can hire a Cart. In haste I am dear Sir very sincerely Yrs

Bush. Washington

I send over the keys of the trunks & boxes which please take care & deliver to mr Marshall— I shall endeavour to see him & my other friends early in October.
