Bushrod Washington was a cousin of Mildred Gregory Washington, Thomas Hammond's second wife.

Description

Thomas Hammond was born in Ireland. He sailed to Baltimore as a teenager for a six-year business apprenticeship. Hammond then moved to Charles Town (in what is now the easternmost county of West Virginia), opened a mercantile business, and served as captain of a Berkeley County militia company. In 1792 he married Mary Lewis "Polly" Tapscott.
