Benjamin Rush (17461813)

Description

Benjamin Rush was born on 4 January 1746 in Byberry, Pennsylvania. He attended what is now Princeton University and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. After establishing his medical practice in Philadelphia, Rush sat in the Continental Congress, signed the Declaration of Independence (a setting of "pensive and awful silence," he recalled decades later), and served as surgeon general of the Continental Army’s Middle Department.
